GRR

i cant get the hand to follow an arc correctly and its driving me bonkers. i've tried tweening and frame by frame, with the former it just is too much of a hassle to rotate it AND shift it along so it stays on its wrist, with frame by frame i cant... get it to follow that red line i drew down there. you can see in the onion skin it stutters.

i guess ill come back to it later, i dont really have any animation knowledge where crit would help (and i think its just me having trouble with flash more often than not)

in other news ive been watching a lot of flash tutorials and reading animators survival kit in an attempt to get better......... learned about easing, anticipation, overshooting, a lot of stuff...

  1. As they say, practice makes perfect. It is a good exercise to draw the path of the hand before you do the animation.

I don't understand why you are having problems rotating the hands with tweening, unless you are letting Flash do the tweening, which I don't recommend for character animation. In fact, your flash animation should be done with key frames.

I recommend the "Flash Cartoon Animation" book from Friends of Ed to learn how to animate a character and how to build a character library, which is crucial.

It would be easier to give you a critique if I could see the animation but, for now, my recommendation is for you to view other walk cycles or arm swinging animations and copy their spacing. Or just videotape yourself. Reference is your best friend.

  2. hiya nazario! i'm definitely practicing a lot lmao.. i've never animated before so it's weird to dive into something without a clue

maybe my flash file will give you a better idea of what im attempting:

i'm on a lesson in the animator's survival kit about using arcs, and i figure'd i'd give it a go in flash and see how much i can do with motion tweening, to get a feel for the program.

my problem with the hand lies in that even adjusting it myself frame by frame, it doesnt stay on the wrist quite right. this is the picture i was going off of:

idk if my gif was working but heres the arm i tried to animate:

also, thanks for the book recommendation- i live off books and video tutorials haha

  3. I gotta say Mokou... you're really movin' along with your Flash skills! It took me forever to just do some lame crap... Anyways, keep it up! I look forward to seeing a Rachael Amps music video! Also, your stylistic work translates really well into Flash, imo.

  5. Hey, I took a look at your animation. Right now it doesn't look bad although I'm not sure what you're going for. However, if you're trying to break the joints, the hand should be pointing the other way. Think of the hand as a flag on a pole you're brandishing. It should point in the opposite direction of the movement. Also, your spacing (the position the drawings in each frame) is too even. For a successful swing the drawings should be closer to each other at the extremes and more separate in the middle of the movement, so you see a change of speed.

Timing and spacing are essential for good animation. My suggestion to you is stay off the Flash tween. Most companies don't even let beginning animators use tweens, and you'll have more control of the movement if you position every frame yourself.

Try doing a cycle of the arm moving back and forth.

I look forward to seeing more.

  6. If by correct hand following arc you refer to Richard Williams example, the difference I see that in his example three arcs are moving together, while your animation starts with two arcs movement, after their rotation stops third arc moves. It's pretty good.
Inbetweeners may move pages of the peg and rotate it until parts align with what they currently animate, tips in here http://animationarchive.net/How%20To/Inbetweeneer/index.php
