2010 art progresssion

well this is depressing. im not one to beat myself up over my art, really, but gosh i've had an incredible art block as of late... as of 5 months late...

in january, feburary, march, i experimented a lot with painting digitally and a lot was studies from photographs, some were paintings i imagined and either way i always felt like "wow!! i have a real natural knack for color, im lucky" and even now i feel like i do have that sort of eye for painting.

in april i started to read more about design and construction in drawing, so i tried to play with a lot of straight vs curve design stuff and i didnt care too much about having a "finished" drawing but more about just really feeling the flow of it. i veered away from painting to study more about designing the figure and doing more cartoony stuff and get a feel for what my style is.

i think i was doing very well with that and i was very involved in my art until about june-july. its actually really sad for me because i know exactly what happened that made me sort of take a nose dive with how vigorous i was with studying.

a friend of mine online passed away and i ended up being a lot more upset than i thought id ever be, was really depressed for about a week then i ended up literally running away to another state until september. during those few months i hardly studied at all, i did draw- but i didn't study, i couldnt juggle looking for a job and worrying about food and rent and all that crap while findint time for myself to do art.

i think thats a super big set back for me and something i should work on this following year; if art is really what i want to do in my life then i should do it no matter the circumstances!!

i returned back home in september, my tablet was broken that month but i did to a lo tof drawings on paper at least.

toward october, with all my free time and tablet back i did a lot of drawing on tegakie. a lot a lot!! somewhere along the way of doing a lot of entries, i decided i wanted to focus more on cartooning and try to develop a style that would work for comics. i think that was another step back for my art, but i dont really regret it too much because i did learn some things.

throughout the later months of this year i started to sit down and think to myself "okay, what do i really want to do with my art? do i just want to illustrate pics or what?" i still dont really know, but my goal for 2011 is to find a project that i can stick to and go back to studying as much as i did in april and may and june.

specifically, i want to try more with watercolors/markers/inking, learning how to develop characters and stories and learn more about composition and comics so i can tell all the stories i have in my mind better

WELL! that has been my art life in 2010. here's to 2011 whee...

hip hop

this is as probably anatomically correct as an asshole on an elbow, but in my studies recently i sort of hit on a way to draw the abs and hips a bit more believable at least for women

or something

i think

ANYWAY the contour line drawing ive been doing has actually helped me a bit with adding variety to my line and avoiding parallels etc

QUESTION POST: cool character shapes study??

WELL i'm sure sorry to have a text only blog post but you see im in a bit of a rut. i have no idea what i want to or should be studying art wise right now. the past few days i've just been doing contour drawings of photographs because it made my lines look "cool"

so i guess i'll take a shot in the dark, and ask if someone could direct me to some pages or even offer some advice on learning character shapes. not exactly sure how to explain this, which also hinders doing any searches for it. basically you look at artists like Shane Prigmore, Nico Marlet (HTTYD, Kung Fu Panda) and they just manipulate shapes in the most pleasing way. they have an excellent grasp of straight vs curve, keeping rhythm in their designs, what "emotion" to aim for. but how does one train themselves to get an eye for this sort of thing?

i feel a bit naieve asking this sort of question because of course the answer is to practice, but what should i be practicing?

animation students seem to have an awesome grasp of exactly what im describing...

i think what im trying to achieve here is a good knowledge of design. i'll hit up rad's how to and other blogs and see what i can dig up. if anyone can help me with their process i'd be forever grateful!!

notetaking

most of these sketches are taken straight ouf of Drawn to Life, so consider this no more than a "notes" post. 2, 3, and 4 are sketches done from photos... more specifically, the Gesture Drawing Tool

by the way, the book i just mentioned... it's amazing. get it. animator, painter, cartoonist, whatever you are- you need this book. it's more than an art book, it teaches you to look at life in a different way.

also some notes are from reading DAVE PIMENTEL's posts. he is also superb and you should definitely look at his posts.
